A few months back my old laptop started showing signs of being on its last leg. A last, crippled, lame leg with a serious case of gangrene. This of course meant it was shopping time. Time passes and what seems to be the perfect replacement is found. Perfect enough that it was not easily affordable. Of course. This left me to write on a machine that had more and more crashes as the weeks and months passed. During the post Christmas sale that is a staple of the Swedish consumer culture I finally found it for a decent price and made my move.
After getting the confirmation email I retired to the kitchen table to try and get as much editing done to Rebirth as I could before the New Years celebrations took all my time. I managed to get through a half chapter before it started making weird sounds. I saved what I had done to that point and tried to find the problem. At which point it decided to crash, and crash hard. I turned the damn thing off and turned on the TV instead to feel the annoyance flow through me.
Now it is after the New Year. It is 2014 and it is time to get off my ass and finish this project so I can move on to the next one.

awoke at night, as his kind always and only did in this world. He was
an old soul, one of the oldest of his kind. A Warden of the night for
uncounted generations. He looked around his surroundings carefully,
searching for anything out of place. He had long since abandoned the
humor in trying to find something out of place in a child's room as
he focused on searching across the clutter for any clue of his
ancient enemies return. It had been years since it had last shown
it's ugly head to Theodore, and even though he had been victorious on
that night it had almost cost him his life and the life of his ward.
Theodore had come out of it with a few new stitches to add to all the
old ones. His ward however was almost taken. It had taken years for
her soul to heal properly though he suspected that she would carry
the burden of his failure for the rest of her life.
that nothing was trying to pierce through to this place he sat up in
the bed and stretched, his body sore and stiff from the lack of
movement during the day. As he stood up he closed his black eyes to
better perceive his wards mind. Humans had such lovely mind glows,
bright and full of color. So bright in fact that when they were awake
they could hold off even the most determined and powerful of foes
from his own home without even noticing the existence of them. When
they slept it was another matter entirely. The glow was diminished as
they lay in their beds and dreamed. Theodore could often see and
share in Alex's dreams through the connections they shared.
Everything from bright flights of fancy to dark and terrible
sat back down on the headboard and focused his will on the line
connecting them together. It was reaching its peak strength. She was
getting old enough to properly understand that he made her safe from
the things from beyond what her parents knew about. That knowledge,
subconscious though it may have been, would tie them together in a
bond that would follow them both for as long as they both lived.
However nothing last forever, and the glorious bond between them
would far to soon start to fade away as her mind grew away from such
childish things as what went bump in the night. Soon after she would
have no use for protection as her sleeping mind would have grown
strong enough to protect her even without a warden present. Though
the bond would exist till the day they died.

I am writing this with one hand, and not because I am looking at naked girls at the same time you pervs. I am using one hand because the other hand is in a cast after a slight oopsie a last Wednesday. Let me tell all my faithful readers that when you get home anything that is supposed to be able to hold up your body weight. Read the manual. I didn't and it resulted in me falling about a meter and a half and landing on my elbow, which resulted in this:
So now it's a while later and I have a couple metal pins attached to my elbow as well as some steel wire holding everything together. The cast should come off in about 3 weeks and I should be back to work 3 weeks after that.
So in conclusion boys and girls. Check your gear and RTFM.

An amusing post showed up on William the Coroner's
blog entitled 'Harry Potter Needs a 1911'
. Go there, read it, then hope for a few slight changes to the last Harry Potter movie that should be coming out soon.

So the President had a press conference where he informed the world that the US military, in a raid outside Islamabad, Pakistan, killed Osama Bin Laden. I want the fucker to be dead. I really, really do. But something is keeping me from accepting it at face value, and until I see a picture of his bloody corpse I will continue to doubt. Of course yet another part is jumping for joy and wishing that rat fuck an unpleasant ride to hell and an even worse stay. It is unfortunate we need to show respect to the customs of Islam in our handling of his body. I wanted to have him paraded through Washington DC with his head ending up on a spike outside the White House. Instead I will simply have to be okay with his body being placed in an unmarked grave called the Mariana Trench. Which is an option I fully support, just not as much as the parade and spike idea.

The Gun is Civilization
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it. In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some. When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single gay on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender. There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society.
A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.
Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.
The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable. When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone.
The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

When I started writing this novel I made a pretty stupid, rookie mistake. I did not plan for the damn book to end. I have now spent a few hours mapping out the rest of the book, and while I don't have an ending yet. I can feel that it's close, real close. I have the next couple chapters mapped out to a reasonable degree, and the end of the book, but not the characters adventures, is finally in sight.
